You may have read author Judy Blume’s “Fudge” books as a child, and now you can share them with your own kids—in Kindle format, no less!
The series kicks off with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (4.5/5 stars, currently priced at $5.99) –
Passed on from babysitters to their young charges, from big sisters to little brothers, and from parents to children, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and its cousins have entertained children since they first appeared in the early 1970s. The books follow Peter Hatcher, his little brother Fudgie, baby sister Tootsie, their neighbor Sheila Tubman, various pets, and minor characters through New York City and on treks to suburbs and camps.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is the first of these entertaining yarns. Peter, because he’s the oldest, must deal with Fudgie’s disgusting cuteness, his constant meddling with Peter’s stuff, and other grave offenses, one of which is almost too much to bear. All these incidents are presented with the unfailing ear and big-hearted humor of the masterful Judy Blume. Though some of her books for older kids have aroused controversy, the Hatcher brothers and their adventures remain above the fray, where they belong. (Peter’s in fourth grade, so the book is suitable for kids ages 8 and older.)
Next up is Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great (5/5 stars, currently priced at $5.99) – one child reviewer says:
I’m nine! I am very picky about books. I was looking in the basement for books because I didn’t like the books that my mom took out from the library. Then guess what I found? I found a book called Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great! It was about a girl who is scared of stuff. (But she lies and makes it out like she is so great.) What will happens when she lies to her friends? Will they figure it out? This is a great book for bedtime stories, class reading books, and for fun reading!I hope you buy this book and enjoy it like I did!
Third in the series is Superfudge (5/5 stars, currently priced at $5.99) –
Nothing is easy for 12-year-old Peter Hatcher. His younger brother, Fudge, is bad enough. But now there’s a new baby coming and the family is moving to Princeton.
Fourth is Fudge-A-Mania (5/5 stars, currently priced at $5.99) –
The Tubmans and the Hatchers return in this latest chronicle of the hilarious escapades of Fudge, Pete, and Tootsie Hatcher and Sheila “Queen of Cooties” Tubman. Their parents decide to spend their summer vacation in the woods of Maine right next door to each other–but “next door” turns out to be in the same house. Fast-paced mayhem becomes the order of the day as children, adults (including Grandma Hatcher and Grandpa Tubman), and assorted pets find themselves in daily (hourly?) predicaments.
The last book in the series is Double Fudge (5/5 stars, currently priced at $5.99) –
Fans of Superfudge and Fudge-a-Mania will welcome the return of seventh-grader Peter Hatcher and his five-year-old brother, Fudge, who in this comical caper meet distant cousins from Hawaii. The two families unexpectedly encounter one another in Washington, D.C., where the New York City Hatchers have gone so that Fudge, who has developed an obsession with money, can visit the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The Howie Hatcher clan proves an eccentric lot…Narrator Peter grits his teeth when the Honolulu Hatchers invite themselves to Manhattan to stay in his family’s cramped apartment, where nestled in their sleeping bags on the living room floor they “slept flat on their backs, like a row of hot dogs in their rolls. All that was missing was the mustard and the relish.” Fudge’s inimitable antics and the characters’ rousing repartee contribute to the sprightly clip of this cheerful read. Ages 8-12.
