Featured Free App of the Day is Moxie

It’s your friendly KF on KND Editor April L. Hamilton here, with a personal free app recommendation for fans of word games: Moxie (4.5/5 stars, guidance suggested, currently FREE).

Like all the great, classic word games, Moxie’s basic concept and gameplay are simple: letter tiles are revealed one at a time, and your job is to place them in a grid consisting of three rows of five boxes each. You score points for each word formed, and for keeping word “chains” going: turning an existing word you already made into a new one by changing or adding a new letter. This gameplay video shows the app on an iPhone, but gameplay is the same on Android devices (and yes, it runs great on my Fire tablet!):

Simple yes, but this game is diabolically addictive. Once I started playing it became difficult to resist the temptation of trying to beat my high score each time I opened the app! My only beef is that rarely, a word I formed was not recognized by the in-app dictionary even though I knew it to be a valid word. Still, this wasn’t a common occurrence and once I saw a given word wouldn’t be accepted it was easy enough to just avoid using that word again.

I don’t know how the developer keeps this app free, because it doesn’t even have any in-app purchases or ratings nags, but don’t miss this opportunity to grab it at no charge.

Moxie: simple, fun, and highly addictive!

Red Herring is another word game from the same developer, and it has an average review rating of 4.5/5 stars across over 2,600 Amazon reviews. In this game you group words together by category. This app does have in-app purchases and ratings nags, but the first 50 puzzles are free and the ratings nags don’t interfere with gameplay or insert extra screens between puzzles. From Amazon:

How to play Red Herring:
1. Group words into categories.

2. Look out for the Red Herrings, pesky little words whose sole purpose is to mislead you.

3. Have fun!

Red Herring is a unique new puzzle game. Each puzzle has only one correct solution and there’s no time limit. Three difficulty levels make it suitable for the whole family.

Red Herring is FUN, CHALLENGING, and EASY TO LEARN. Don’t say we didn’t warn you if you can’t stop playing. Give Red Herring a try today!
