Julie’s Review:

7th grade and up…WOW!!  I really liked this book…it introduced me to a new style of poetry – Slam Poetry.  Layken and Will are very likeable characters…You instantly liked Layken and felt for her.  Losing her father unexpectedly and then having to move away from home.  She is trying to be strong for her mother and brother…but is really struggling with his death and then the move on top of that.  I thought she was older than she was since she was driving the moving truck at the beginning of the book.  And so did Will, her new neighbor, who was attracted to her from the first time that he saw her horsing around with her brother and his.  Will is a huge fan of Slam poetry and that is where they went on their first date…a Slam competition. It is hard to give any more information without putting a HUGE SPOILER ALERT on this review…Huge obstacle keeps them apart… Download this book; pick up this book to find out what happens!

Education Value: 5 out 5 – STAAR testing (Texas mandated test) has a focus on poetry.  This would be a great book to read to the class.  This would be a great intro to poetry for middle grades.  This would be a great unit for leaving rhyming poetry behind.

Entertainment Value: 5 out of 5 – I downloaded the 2nd book immediately. This book covered so many different issues that happen to people every day.  It was not just a romance.  It talked about morals, doing the right thing – even when you did not want to, responsibility and more.  It will bring tears to your eyes at times.
