The Leafy Fall
One sunny day in late fall a giraffe came to America. He came from Africa to visit his friend raccoon. The raccoon lived in the great northern forest. The giraffe was enjoying his visit to the north and was excited to see all of the things that the new country had to offer.
One day as the two of them ventured out into the fall day and began to walk down the path in the forest, a strong gust of wind blew across the pathway. Red and gold leaves and brown grass blew around, flying off from the maple trees nearby and from the ground that they walked in.
The giraffe was just amazed. Not too many leaves blew around where he lived, and he wasn’t quite sure what it was. It was frightening. He glanced down, noticing that the reddish gold leaves looked very much like the patches on his body.
“Oh dear, oh dear,” the giraffe exclaimed. “I can’t believe this, but you can see for yourself. It is so cold here in your country that the freckles and patches are starting to freeze away from my body.”
He turned and began to trot down the road so that he could get back to their den before all of his lovely patches were gone.
The little raccoon ran after him quickly and cried out, “Don’t go home. Don’t be silly. It’s not your patches falling off dear. It’s the trees.”
He steered his friend toward the pond so that the giraffe could look into the water and see his reflection. “See silly, all of your patches are still there.”
“Poor trees…” said the giraffe. “Why they are losing their patches?”
“The trees are throwing their leaves at me so that I can gather them to make a lovely winter nest to stay warm.”
