AN UNQUIET AMERICAN
by AFN CLARKE
Rufus Reed, a former British Special Forces officer turned controversial author, wakes up to find himself incarcerated in a secret CIA ‘Black Site’ prison outside the United Sates and beyond the reach of all legal and ethical conventions. Drugged and kidnapped from his home in Marin County near San Francisco, he has been arrested under the U.S. Government’s Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, under a warrant procured with very dubious, if not fabricated, evidence.
Relentlessly questioned and ruthlessly tortured, Rufus treads a fine line with his own life as he tries to outwit his captors. But can he? Racing against time and the unexpected twists and turns of events that take place across the world, from Hong Kong, Jordan, Italy, Ireland and Latvia to the highest levels of the Vatican, the Knesset and the US Government, this political thriller reveals tragic and disturbing decisions in history from 1948 to the present, the far reaching consequences of which we are having to deal with today.
Set against the background of the 2008 Presidential Elections, this fast-paced, heart stopping mind-bending novel defies convention and questions the very fabric of American Democracy and the values and ethics of our so-called civilized world.
From The Author
As a child I never questioned why it was that I was born in Hong Kong and why my family lived in exotic places like India, Libya and Iran. It was just how it was and I loved the excitement of traveling to far away places, hearing different languages, eating local foods and exploring each new place we lived. Only later did I realize that I was actually the son of a British MI6 operative – a low level intelligence gatherer – and only then did many aspects and events of our life become clear to me.
Then, as a young man, I joined the elite British Parachute Regiment. It was a way to provide a secure future for my family and in some far recess of my yet uninformed mind I thought it would be a continuation of my life of adventure. It was, but not in ways that I expected. Suffice it to say that after 8 years of service in different parts of the world, I left the army after two bloody tours in Northern Ireland with half my guts missing and have required numerous life saving operations since. Living with the reminder of hatred and war each day is a sobering and life changing experience.
AN UNQUIET AMERICAN is a semi-autobiographical novel, in that it draws on many of my life experiences and those of people close to me. Much of Rufus Reed’s life experiences are like mine, though I must say he is a much more intriguing, intelligent, measured and likeable character than I could ever claim to be! I can’t deny that AN UNQUIET AMERICAN reflects my own strong beliefs, interpretation of history and conclusions about why our world is the way it is. I can’t deny that I have a deep dislike and distrust of politicians who curtail our freedoms and try to rewrite history or determine its course to suit their own ends. I personally believe that power, greed and religious fervor cause most of the pain, anguish and conflict in the world and those negative experiences can be avoided, if we simply remember that we are one species and that what hurts one of us hurts us all.
