DRY TORTUGAS
by AFN CLARKE
This powerfully moving novel traces a young woman’s journey of self-discovery as she travels from Rhode Island to reunite with her father in the Florida Keys. Unforgettable, dramatic and uplifting it will stay with you long after the last page is turned and is especially dedicated by the author to his daughters.
Nikki Kimble was brought up by her mother in the lap of luxury, with every material thing she could ever want, except for the presence and love of her father Jake, a former bestselling author who disappeared from her life when she was three years old. All she has are fleeting memories and a romantic notion of him gleaned from the central character in his novels.
On the death of her mother, Nikki feels impelled to search for Jake, hoping to ease her sense of loss and to reconnect with a missing part of herself. When she finds him aboard a battered yacht in the Florida Keys her illusions are shattered and both their worlds start to unravel.
As father and daughter face-off in an emotionally charged atmosphere – on a leaking yacht off the Dry Tortugas adrift in the middle of a massive storm – their fury, sadness and sense of loss is countered by that mysterious and precious bond that exists between a father and a daughter, and the deep-seated human need for love, belonging and new beginnings.
This dramatic and inspirational novel touches the part of us that’s experienced the heartache of love, loss and betrayal. It also reminds us of the joy and exuberance that bubbles up within us when the strength and power of the human spirit allows us to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles that life places in our way.
Dry Tortugas is a novel that has taken shape over many years just because it’s been such a personal book to write. While not autobiographical, it does reflect the intensity of emotions that I have personally experienced when family relationships go through tough times. It is a story about dealing with the complexity of human emotions and how different people react to things that happen in their lives.
It traces a very personal life encounter between a daughter and her father. Nikki doesn’t understand why her father left when she was just three. He can’t bring himself to tell her the truth and has been trying to hide from it most of his life. But when their worlds collide they can no longer hide, and the novel traces the story of how they are both forced to “grow up” and what happens when they do. I personally feel it’s a story that will appeal to both men and women, young and old equally. I hope that as readers it will touch your hearts, provide you with a good and intriguing tale and leave you feeling like you have been on a colorful, rich and fulfilling journey.
I think that one of my greatest lessons in life comes through in this book – that life is like a good wine, providing us with the opportunities to grow and mature, allowing us to mellow with time and care, and truly appreciate and cherish what we have in life.
