Kids on Fire: A 16 Year Old’s Review Of Gravity Guy

This week, 16 year old “D” reviews the Gravity Guy app.

Content Type: Game app

Description: Today I saw a familiar game in the app store, and decided to play it.  Gravity Guy.  Basically, you’re in the future, you’re a robot/cybertron/robocop thing that’s running from a cylon/terminator/evil robot copper chasing after you.  You run around and on top of platforms and obstacles by reversing your gravitational field so you can run on the underside of platforms, however there are a great many gaps between platforms and you can’t flip gravity in mid-air.  It’s amazingly simple.  Tap to reverse your robot thing’s gravity.  Sounds fun, right?

Wrong.  At least in my opinion.  It’s incredibly difficult, irritating, time consuming, and just a general bad way to waste an afternoon.  I think it’s because the controls are too simple, the character doesn’t do enough.  It doesn’t help that you have unlimited lives.  I guess that’s pretty useful with this game, as I recall the original only gave you five or ten which would run dry pretty fast, but what’s the point of it being so freaking difficult when you can’t get to game over?  I guess that is the point that allows them to make the game so difficult.

This game is beyond reaction time.  To me it comes down to sheer luck that I’m able to make it to the next checkpoint.   I wasn’t much a fan of the original either.  I’ve never gotten to the end, so as of yet I’m not even sure if there is an end.  There’s two modes to this game, free run, and story mode.  I played story mode for hours, dying again and again and again.  Running into walls, falling up, falling down, getting caught by the cop, and I’m sure there are eventually more hazards to avoid, or they simply make an area that’s impossible altogether!

It isn’t a game that hooks you in, but you could easily find yourself continually playing out of pure rage at the game.  And death after death after death you begin to lose interest until you eventually give up.  I’m sure there are those of you with more determination than I, and I’m not saying it’s a particularly bad game, well… Okay, I am.  But that’s just because I personally do not like this game.  I encourage you to see for yourselves if I’m right or wrong, but I can guarantee you will die.  A lot.

What I Liked: It’s a good concept, but nowadays there are so many gravity-warping games this just seems like a weak concept amongst its kind.  The graphics are alright.

What Could Be Better: I don’t have any suggestions.  I’m not sure there’s any way to improve this game.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

I Would Recommend To: Anyone needing anger management practice, or has a few hours to kill with this stressful game.

Gravity Guy has an average review rating of 3.5/5 stars and is currently priced at 99 cents in the Amazon App Store.
