June’s List of 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less

A new month means a new list of Kindle book bargains! This month’s list includes the following books, all of which have an average review rating of 4/5 or higher:

Fear Strikes Out: The Jim Piersall Story ($1.99) – A star of the 1950s Red Sox recounts his career and his battle with mental illness. When Jim Piersall first donned a Boston Red Sox uniform, he quickly distinguished himself as one of baseball’s most colorful figures. Prone to wild rages, he argued with umpires, managers, and his fellow teammates, showing off an unpredictable personality that fans and sportswriters ate up, but which infuriated his club. His behavior became more erratic until he suffered a violent breakdown that saw him institutionalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Cowritten with Boston sportswriter Al Hirshberg, this is the story of Piersall’s collapse and his subsequent attempt to return to the major leagues. A shattering confessional of mental hardship, Fear Strikes Out is an unforgettable look at the difficulties of playing sports at the highest level.

Trojan Horse ($1.99) – Daniel Youngblood is a world-weary oil and gas investment banker who’s ready to hit the beach, when he’s hired by a Saudi Prince for an OPEC deal where he can net himself $25 million as a swan song. At the same time, he meets and falls in love with Lydia, an exotic European fashion photographer, who he later discovers is really CIA-trained spy with a shocking past with the Saudi Prince. She convinces Daniel to enlist in what becomes a race for the lovers to stop a Muslim terrorist internet plot to bring down the Saudi royal family and cripple the world’s oil capacity, all before they wind up dead. Excerpts from Bull Street, The Gravy Train and Vaccine Nation, David Lender’s other thrillers, follow the text of Trojan Horse.

A Century of Spies: Intelligence in the Twentieth Century ($2.99) – Here is the ultimate inside history of twentieth-century intelligence gathering and covert activity. Unrivalled in its scope and as readable as any spy novel, A Century of Spiestravels from tsarist Russia and the earliest days of the British Secret Service to the crises and uncertainties of today’s post-Cold War world, offering an unsurpassed overview of the role of modern intelligence in every part of the globe. From spies and secret agents to the latest high-tech wizardry in signals and imagery surveillance, it provides fascinating, in-depth coverage of important operations of United States, British, Russian, Israeli, Chinese, German, and French intelligence services, and much more.

All the key elements of modern intelligence activity are here. An expert whose books have received high marks from the intelligence and military communities, Jeffrey Richelson covers the crucial role of spy technology from the days of Marconi and the Wright Brothers to today’s dazzling array of Space Age satellites, aircraft, and ground stations.

Red Velvet and Absinthe: Paranormal Erotic Romance ($1.99) – Red Velvet and Absinthe explores love and lust with otherworldly partners who, by their sheer fantastical nature, evoke passion and desire far beyond that which any normal human being can inspire. Although the greats such as Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and Daphne du Maurier are long dead, these contemporary authors keep the Gothic spirit alive and well by interpreting it in new and exciting ways. Red Velvet and Absinthe offers readers a collection of unique and original stories that conjure up the atmospheric and romantic spirit of the Gothic masters (and mistresses) but take things a bit further by adding to the brew a generous dosage of eroticism. Lie back and listen to the wind howling outside your window as you read these stories in the flickering light of a candle, the absinthe you’re sipping warming your body like the caressing touch of a lover’s fingers . . .

The Worst-Case Scenario Survive-o-pedia Junior Edition ($1.99) – “I have a loyal group of nonfiction readers (ages 8-10) who come into the library each week in search of The Guinness World Records [books]. If all of the Guinness books are checked out, then they will check out The Scholastic Book of Records or The Dangerous Book for Boys. Now there’s a new general knowledge book that will have reluctant readers asking for more….The Worst Case Scenario Survive-O-Pedia would make a popular addition to the 031s (general knowledge). Beware, you’ll need to start a waiting list once the kids see it!” The Nonfiction Detectives blog

Amazon reviewer Alex Honda says, “So even though the information might save their life (and yours) one day, they won’t even realize it now because they’ll be having too much fun reading the book.”

This post barely scratches the surface. There are also such titles as 14,000 Things To Be Happy About ($2.99), Campfire Cookery ($3.99), The Dog Next Door And Other Stories of Dogs We Love ($2.99), The DIY Wedding ($1.99), The Bird Watching Answer Book ($2.99) and Mastering the Grill ($3.99).
