Dragon's Awakening: A Dragon Shifter YA Fantasy (Heir of Dragons Book 1) Kindle Edition
Kaylee just blasted her first date with lightning. She has no idea how, but when the creep pulls a sword on her, what’s a girl to do?
Soon, she’s discovering a whole magical world she had no clue existed, all hidden in plain sight. And that lightning she summoned? Even among paranormals, that’s not normal.
Turns out Kaylee is a dragon-kin, a half dragon/half human with the incredibly rare power to summon storms. As if that weren’t trouble enough, her newly discovered magic has attracted the wrong kind of attention: Slayers, a murderous ancient order dedicated to eradicating all dragon-kin. They’re planning something big. Something deadly.
And they’re going to use Kaylee to do it.
Dragon’s Awakening is the first book in the complete YA fantasy Heir of Dragons series. If you like snarky, fast-paced fantasies full of dragon shifters, awakened elemental magic, mystery, and a slow-burn romance, this series is for you

About the author

Sean Fletcher is an award-winning, bestselling author of a number of fantasy series, in addition to forthcoming books whose characters will not give him a moment's peace until they get their turn in the spotlight. When not making up highly-enjoyable lies and putting them down on paper, he's often doing something most people find masochistic, like cycling long distances, hiking high mountains, and indulging in more sweets than is medically advisable.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025Great fantasy. I was enraptured by Kaylee (by the way, that’s also my daughter’s name) and her determination to unveil her true powers, which to some extent she eventually did.
Edwin was a star in his own way and together they made a great team. I believe they still have a long way to go in their journey together. Maddox and Jade, great team work. I hope I’ll get to see more actions from all of them in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2018I received this book at a discount, I subscribe to a mailing list that tells me when books are at no cost or low cost. I also happen to be an Unlimited subscriber, but that doesn't deter me from making an honest review.
The plot overall was decent. I've been on a dragon shifter kick where almost all of the books I am reading currently are dragon or dragon descendants. Some of it was a little too guessable I guess is the best way to describe it. Without out spoilers, I knew what was going to happen before it did. Overall though, it was easy to read and hard to put down. I ended up reading it and the sequel in one day. I just finished the third of the series and am installing the 4th. They're all on unlimited as well so if you're a subscriber, score. I'll leave a review for the others later, I just wanted to put this out here.
If you're looking for a good easy read with a plot that is mostly easy to follow, this is for you. If you're looking for rated r stuff, well these are kids, none of that happens here. I actually enjoyed that part, I didn't have to worry about if the next page was going to be super rated x or anything. A lot of shifter books are that way so I am always hesitant on where I read them. So points to the author for that.
If you're hesitant to read this, just go for it. You'll probably know if you'll get into it or not sooner rather than later. To me it was hard to put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018A promising start to a new series, Sean Fletcher has written an imaginative and exciting, unpredictable story, with a new type of dragon shifter called dragonkin. There are also otherkin, magic, and other dragon shifters and much more.
With just the right hint of romance, it is a well written story with a twist - has a good plot and has excellent detailed descriptions to settings and scenes and vivid imagery when and where the fast paced action and adventures take place.
In this excellent dragon fantasy, there is good interaction between the believable cast of characters which are well presented, and compliment and support the storyline, so drawing the readers attention from the very beginning.
There is the heroine Kaylee and Edwin the Merlin, Jade the Tamer and Maddox the Protector and the unique, likeable and hilarious Baba - their teacher. An enjoyable and captivating book to read. Recommended!
Gifted with a copy for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020This book would be great for teenagers or young adults. I like that it has adventure and magic, and that it's a clean story. I've seen better fantasy, though. I did enjoy the kids, their interactions, and the creative dragon magic. They acted like teenagers. However, there was a lot of clumsy writing. For example, what butler talks in preteen clumsy phrases? He said he did, but he would "pretend like he did not." There was grasping for a descriptive phrase and missing, repeatedly. Sorry, but the color gray is not angry or broiling. I don't like typos, either. At least they mostly didn't detract from the story. This story is mainly complete in itself, but there are broad hints of the plot continuation in the next book of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018This is the first book I’ve read by Sean Fletcher, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. When Kaylee Richards finds out she is a dragon-kin, she also learns her best friend Jade has changed without her knowing it. Then she meets Edwin, a rather incompetent Merlin, and Edwin’s Protector, Maddox. These four teenagers make a formidable team, which lands them in several dangerous situations. I also like other characters, especially Baba, Kaylee’s trainer, who is a force to be reckoned with. Her unique house and its secret/forbidden room are amazing. I enjoyed this story so much that it was hard to stop reading and I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series. If you like stories with strong characters, magic, suspense, and verbal sparring, this book is for you. I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2018An overall good read. I enjoyed the character flaws shown and could appreciate their growth because of them. I especially enjoyed the daily nuances of ordinary life (school in this YA heroine case) that the author brought into the story. Fantasy should be fantastical but adding mundane activities adds a small bit of realism that the reader can relate to the characters making them emotionally invested in them as opposed to casual observer.
I don't normally read YA fantasy as I prefer the greater level of intrigue and freedom an older protagonist has to make really bad choices (and hopefully learn from them). This book had a young heroine breaking down this notion however with frequent mistakes. Good intentions as to be expected from a save the world archetype but her ability to follow instructions is so poor as to be laughable. Hope to see her maturation both with her abilities and her reasoning in the coming books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2024Very good read. Sometimes slow starting as characters are developing. Not this book, I love to read, I devoured this book. Great storyline and finale.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The trials and tribulations of a young girl finding out she is not all human and with the help of her friends and trainers learning how to cope. Then along come some who want to take it all away . No spoilers just a recommendation to read this book to find out what happens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy read
There was the odd inappropriate comment that didn’t fit, but I’m looking forward to the rest of the series anyway. The story is mostly believable and easy to read with plenty of action and interaction.

4.0 out of 5 stars I want to read the next book
Kaylee Richards' best friend is Jade Azuma and they have been close since they were 6. Jade is also friends with Maddox, but Kaylee hadn't met him till the first day of high school. Maddox is very charming to Kaylee and she feels like she might be falling for him.
Alastair Dumas is head of the Dragon Convocation for Scarsdale and he is the one who decides who does what, and when. His son Edwin is who Kaylee joins to train with, so that her newly discovered powers can be controlled.
Kaylee has already met Brendan Jowkowsky, who initially took her on a date and tried to seduce her. Then when she tried to resist his advances, he turned angry and tried to kill her, she had to make good use of her self defence class training.
Kaylee finds her life changes after her altercation with Brendan, and Brendan is determined to see her life end.
This is a coming of age, young adult, teen fantasy, that involves a group of youngsters working together to save themselves and their families from an organisation that is trying to wipe out all dragon-kin and control all the powers that dragon-kin possess.
It was a fun book to read. I think it was be well liked by its target audience. I am not the target audience, so I found it little too scripted.
<blockquote>"Well I just got told I’m a dragon-kin and nearly died today, so sorry if I’m not in the quiet mood."</blockquote>
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I couldn't decide on 3 or 4 stars, so I've sat on my review for a while (metaphorically speaking) and because I want to read the next book, still, I have decided on a 4.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page turner
This was a hard book to put down. Once I started to read, I didn't want to stop. The drama and suspense in every chapter made for an excellent read. You won't be disappointed.
