Prime Video Spotlight: Torchwood

Torchwood is the excellent BBC spin-off from Dr. Who, and seasons 1 – 3 are currently available in the Amazon Prime Instant Video catalog, meaning Prime members can view them all for free!

The premise of the series is that there’s a secret agency code-named Torchwood, based in England, that’s tasked with collecting and safeguarding alien and supernatural artifacts. The series sprawls far beyond that brief description though, with plotlines enmeshed in history, espionage and more.

The group is headed up by an American, Captain Jack Harkness, a mysterious man who seems like a character lifted from the World War I era—because he really is a veteran of that war. His seeming agelessness and immortality are both a gift and a curse, and may be cogs in a much larger machine he’s yet to discover.

Fans of Dr. Who, Stargate SG-1 or The X-Files will likely enjoy this show a lot. Sci-fi and supernatural fans, take note: seasons 1-9 of the The X-Files, seasons 1 – 10 of Stargate SG-1 and seasons 1-6 of Dr. Who (beginning with the episodes starring Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor) are currently included in the Prime Video catalog, too!

From IMDB:

Captain Jack Harkness, the former Time Agent and con man from the 51st century last seen traveling with the Doctor, ventures to early 21st century Cardiff. There, he becomes a member of Torchwood Institute, a renegade criminal investigation group founded by Queen Victoria to battle hostile extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.
