This week, 10 year old Aidan reviews the Discovery Channel series Mythbusters.
Description: Mythbusters is a show where Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage, Grant Imahara, Tory Belleci and Kari Byron test viral videos, movie scenes and all kinds of things people think are true but that they never tested in real life. A lot of the things they test wouldn’t be safe for regular people to test, they have special safety equipment and help from police, firefighters, explosives experts and other scientists to make sure no one gets hurt.
Sometimes they test whether things that happened in movies would really work the same way in real life. Sometimes they test viral videos to see if the video was real or faked, by trying to do the same thing that’s in the video. Sometimes they test old sayings and things that people believe even though they never saw it put to the test. In the end every myth is called “confirmed” if it’s true, “busted” if it’s not, or “plausible” if it’s possible but not too likely.
They also have special episodes where all the myths they’re testing have to do with the same thing. They’ve had special episodes about pirate myths, burglar myths and holiday myths. My favorite special episode is Duct Tape Island, where Adam and Jamie had to survive on a deserted island with no supplies except duct tape. They used it to build shoes, hats, hammocks, a water bottle, nets to trap wild chickens, and lots of other things.
What I Liked: I like how the show is funny and teaches about science. I like all the explosions, they blow things up a lot and they always show it in super slow motion afterward so you can see all the details. I like how they invent special machines and equipment to do their tests on every episode. I also like it when a myth everyone thinks is true turns out to be busted or something no one thinks is true turns out to be confirmed, like when they went to Africa and found out wild elephants really are afraid of mice.
What Could Be Better: I think the show is great just how it is.
Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
I Would Recommend To: I would recommend Mythbusters to anyone who is interested in science, inventions and explosions, and to people who wonder if the things they hear and see in movies and on YouTube are really true.
Mythbusters is currently available in Amazon’s Instant Video Store. Individual episodes are $1.99 to to rent, $1.89 each if you buy a TV pass for every episode in a season.
