The Sick Box
Wanna-be advice columnist, Ben Matthews, is faced with a ridiculous problem that even he can offer no explanation for. Ben’s five-year-old daughter, Mallory, has been acting strange lately: excessive vomiting, talking to an imaginary friend she calls Karen, and writing profanities on the walls and ceilings. Ben’s wife, Dana, insists that the child is possessed by demons. Ben mansplains to Dana that Mallory is merely going through “a phase.” It is only after the disagreement becomes toxic, that Ben realizes his wife might have a point. Mallory is, most certainly, possessed by a Karen. He needs to help her, but can a man who claims to have all the answers ever admit to being wrong?
Meanwhile, in Hell, the toilet paper is like fine-grit sandpaper, and Karen is sick of it. She wants out!Karen works at the Nakara Corporation, Hell’s largest provider of wireless communications, internet, and cable television, and she’s been offered a promotion. Nakara is moving her up to the executive floor. All she has to do is possess the body of a child named Mallory Matthews, avoid an exorcism, and finish her report for the board of directors by Monday. She will pave the way for Satan’s outreach team, the great Beast will rise, and Karen will get another chance at living, in a new body, a fresh start.
And no one better mess it up for her, or there will be Hell to pay!
“Hell is other people, and those people have a better wireless package than most of Canada. The Sick Box takes a lighter look at a dark subject with wit, charm, and a dash of dark humour.” — Jim Phoenix, owner of HauntedMTL.com
“Part Good Omens and part Conjuring, The Sick Box checks that sweet spot between a dead-job survival guide and a heartfelt exploration of what the afterlife can do to one poor soul.” — Lamar Jenkins, author of The Tupac Files
This second edition includes an excerpt from The Sick Box II — Satan’s Villiage.
