Editor’s Picks: Halloween Sound Effects & Stories

It’s your friendly KF on KND Editor April Hamilton here, with some Halloween treats to share.

I have very fond memories of my sisters and I gathered around our little-kid phonograph in a darkened bedroom, listening to Disney’s Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House with nothing but each other and a flashlight to protect us.

We wore that vinyl out with our repeated listenings, but now the same album is available in digital! This album contains many of the sound effects used in rides and attractions in the Disney parks, as well as in Disney films. It has 20 tracks in all, an average review rating of 5/5 stars, and is currently priced at $9.49.

Basil Rathbone & Vincent Price Read Edgar Allan Poe Stories & Poems (5/5 stars, currently priced at $8.99) is my second pick.

Who better to read these 20 stories and poems of gothic horror than the late, great Mssrs. Price and Rathbone?

The collection includes such Poe classics as The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Gold Bug, The Haunted Palace, The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Black Cat and more.

My favorite narrated Poe collection of all time is Closed on Account of Rabies.

The double-CD collection includes Christopher Walken reading The Raven, Iggy Pop reading The Tell-Tale Heart, Gabriel Byrne reading The Masque of the Red Death and plenty more great tracks with narrators like Marianne Faithfull, Jeff Buckley and Debbie Harry.

There are still some copies of the CD available for purchase new and used, but sadly, this recording is no longer in print and was never made available in digital format. As the rarity of the collection has gone up, so has the price.
