New 2015 Fire Tablets Are Coming

If you’ve been thinking about buying a new Fire tablet, you may want to hold off a bit. At least three new Fire tablet models are slated for release in time for the holiday shopping season, and one of them is reported to be priced at just $50.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting:

The Seattle online retailer plans to release a $50 tablet with a 6-inch screen, in time for this year’s holidays, according to people familiar with the matter…The move would potentially attract buyers looking for a simple—and effectively disposable—device for straightforward tasks like streaming video at home and shopping on Amazon.com.

But such inexpensive tablets typically come with compromises…For instance, the $50 device will have a mono speaker, rather than stereo, one of the people said…

The $50 device is part of a slate Amazon is planning to release this year that will also include tablets with 8-inch and 10-inch screens, according to the people familiar.

In years past the current-model Fire tablets have always been discounted just before the release of the new models, so whether you want to get a 2014 model at a bargain price or prefer to wait and see what the new line has to offer, it’s probably best to sit tight for the time being.

It’s already pretty widely known that the new Fire tablets will run on a new Fire operating system, based on Android Lollipop, and that current, 4th generation Fires will support the new operating system as well—possibly 3rd generation, 2013 models as well.

Other than the few details revealed above, no hardware or software specifications for the new tablets have been released. We’ll be on the lookout for any news ahead of the release, so stay tuned for updates.
