Instant Video Bargain Alert For 1/12/13

Since I’m gradually making the transition to an all-digital video library, every week I’m on the lookout for price drops on Instant Videos from my DVD/Blu-ray collection. If I can get it for $6.99 or less, I generally do. And if you’re also making the same transition, you should do likewise. Many Instant Videos I’ve bought at $6.99 or less went back up to $9.99 in a matter of days.

I figured that since I’m already trudging through the Instant Video listings on my own behalf, I should start sharing my finds with KF on KND’s audience. Why should ALL of us have to spend the time and effort scouring the listings?  🙂

Here are some of today’s more popular movie finds. All of the following Instant Videos are priced at $6.99 as of this writing, but prices are subject to change. Be sure to grab any you want now, before prices go back up.

Easy A – A virginal, clean-cut high school girl decides to help out some nerds and raise some funds at the same time by allowing guys to claim they’ve slept with her in exchange for money. A smart, sweet, funny examination of high school mores, sexual politics and double standards. Stars Emma Stone.

Grown Ups – Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider star in this surprisingly funny and heartwarming tale of old high school friends coming back together as adults, with kids, wives, and even a grandmother in tow for an idyllic trip to the same lake cabin they loved as kids. When the complications of adult life and parenting intrude, the guys still manage to find a way to make the trip one the entire group will never forget.

Coraline – a young girl who wishes for parents who would let her do anything she wants gets her wish, but learns there’s a price to pay: the loss of her real parents. Coraline proves a clever and resourceful girl as she takes on the evil Other Mother in this stop-motion animated film.

The Blindside – Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Oscar winner Kathy Bates star in this remarkable true story of All-American football star Michael Oher, played by newcomer Quinton Aaron.

This is an incredibly funny (and raunchy) film, definitely NOT for the easily-offended.

The Matrix – Computer hacker Neo must take on The Machines to free all of mankind from The Matrix: a life support system that uses humans to generate volts while keeping them dreaming about lives that don’t really exist at all. This is the movie that broke the mold for special effects in the new millenium!

The Hurt Locker – When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. A movie that the NY Daily News says “deserves to stand as one of the defining films of the decade.”

Sweeney Todd – Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter star in Tim Burton’s bleak adaptation of the smash Broadway hit.

500 Days of Summer – Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Daschanel star in this funny, anti- romantic comedy that takes a much more realistic and poignant look at the challenges of finding a love that lasts. Things aren’t all tied up in a fairy tale bow by the end, but lessons are learned and hope survives.

Crash – The lives of Angelenos intersect in unpredictable ways in this Academy Award -winning drama.

Tropic Thunder – A spoof of military action films, starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, in which a group of egomaniac, diva actors suddenly find the action movie they’re in the jungle to shoot has become all too real. Tom Cruise is here too, unrecognizable in layers of makeup and body-altering wardrobe; be sure to watch for his dancing scene!

No Country For Old Men – Javier Bardem stars as a cold-blooded assassin unlike any that’s come before, sent out to retrieve missing drug money. Josh Brolin plays the smart, cool cowboy who found the funds while out hunting and enacts a plan to keep the money. Tommy Lee Jones co-stars as the lawman who’s grown tired of the evil that men do, but must nevertheless bring this case to a close. Woody Harrelson also has a small but memorable role, as a sociopathic bounty hunter who’s also on the trail of the money.

Sleepy Hollow – The classic tale is given new life in this Tim Burton adaptation, starring Johnny Depp and Cristina Ricci.

Up In The Air – George Clooney stars as a very successful businessman who’s growing tired of spending so much of his life in airports, never truly connecting with anyone in a meaningful way. His meetings with a smart, attractive woman while on the road lead him to reconsider what “success” really means.
