Instant Video Spotlight: Marvel’s Avengers, Before They Were Avengers

The Incredible Hulk (PG-13, 4/5 stars, Instant Video currently priced at $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – Edward Norton stars as Dr. Bruce Banner, whose accidental exposure to gamma radiation causes him to transform into a giant, raging, green beast of a man when he gets angry or stressed. Can Banner find a way to control, and even harness, this new power?


Iron Man (PG-13, 4.75/5 stars, Instant Video currently priced at $9.99 to buy) – Robert Downey Jr. stars as the brilliant, but irreverent, Tony Stark: the CEO of his father’s inherited weapons megaconglomerate. Confined to a Middle East prison, behind enemy lines, Stark is tasked by his captors to develop a super weapon for them, an impenetrable, weaponized suit of armor. Stark does as he’s ordered, but secretly plans to use the armor himself, to escape. Once he does, Stark can see this new invention of his has great potential as a crime fighting tool.


Iron Man 2 (PG-13, 4/5 stars, Instant Video currently priced at $1.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – Tony Stark is back, and with his perfected Iron Man suit well-established, he’s being pursued by military interests who want to see the suit mass-produced for use by soldiers. When Stark balks at the notion, the military powers that be hire another brilliant weapons expert, the Russian Ivan Vanko (played by Mickey Rourke), to build cyber soldiers for them. But Vanko is just out for vengeance, having blamed Stark’s father for the death of his family and the bombing of his homeland. When the military loses control of not only Vanko, but his cyber-soldiers as well, Stark must not only save himself, but the entire world from the machinations of Vanko.


Thor (PG-13, 4/5 stars, currently priced at $14.99 to buy) – Chris Hemsworth stars as Thor, the warrior-god who’s been exiled to Earth as punishment for his hubris and poor judgment in bringing his people to the brink of war after generations of peace. When Thor’s brother Loki sets out to destroy Earth and Thor along with it, thereby solidifying his own claim to the throne, Thor must find a way to defeat his brother and prove himself a noble son and warrior once more.

Captain America, The First Avenger (PG-13, 4/5 stars, currently priced at $14.99 to buy) – Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers, a WWII -era young man who’s so small and weak he’s been repeatedly turned down for military enlistment. But when a scientist who’s developing a serum designed to turn ordinary men into super soldiers meets Rogers, he thinks he’s found the perfect test candidate. The serum transforms Rogers into a much larger, stronger man who soon goes from providing entertainment and symbolic inspiration only, to playing a key role in the turning of the tide for the Allies.
