Instant Video Spotlight: The Films of the Coen Brothers

Ethan and Joel Coen are a legendary team of screenwriter-director brothers who’ve racked up more box office sales, accolades and awards than many other leading filmmakers combined. Their quirky, often dark or darkly comic films always feature a top-notch cast thrown into some unlikely, yet wholly believable situations.

Raising Arizona (rated PG-13, 4.5/5 stars, currently priced at $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – When a childless couple consisting of an ex-con and an ex-cop decide to help themselves to one of another family’s quintupelets, their lives get more complicated than they anticipated—in hilarious ways! O Brother, Where Art Thou? Also stars John Turturro, and features Holly Hunter and John Goodman.

The Big Lebowski (rated R, 4.5/5 stars, currently priced at $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – This Coen brothers’ hilariously twisted and irreverent cult comedy-thriller stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore. Join the “Dude” and his bowling buddies on their journey that blends unforgettable characters, kidnapping, a case of mistaken identity and White Russians. Enter the visually unique and entertaining world from the creative minds of the Coen brothers and remember: the Dude abides.

Fargo (rated R, 4.5/5 stars, currently priced at $2.99 to rent) – Jerry Lundegaard’s inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen’s bungling and the persistent police work of pregnant Marge Gunderson. A pitch black comedy and multiple award winner, including the Oscar. Stars William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand.

Miller’s Crossing(rated R, 4.5/5 stars, currently priced at $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – When gangsters begin to feud over a bookie during Prohibition, one man tries to keep the peace and finds himself caught in the middle of a war of shifting allegiances. The Hudsucker Proxy (rated PG, 4/5 stars, currently priced at $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – An ambitious but naive young man rapidly moves up the corporate ladder from the mailroom to the executive suite, unaware that he is part of the board of directors’ nefarious scheme.

No Country For Old Men(rated R, 3.5/5 stars, currently priced at $1.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy) – The winner of 4 Academy Awards, this film leaves audiences starkly divided: it seems they either love it or hate it. Like Miller’s Crossing, this film is a straight, very dark and violent drama that focuses on crime and men on both sides of the law. Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande.
