Kids on Fire: A Fifth Grader Takes On Scott Pilgrim

This week, a fifth-grade guest reviewer reviews Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (rated PG-13), and the graphic novel on which it’s based, Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life.

Content Type: Instant Video, Graphic Novel

Description: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a movie about this guy named Scott Pilgrim who sees a girl in a daydream and then sees her in real life and falls in love with her, but before they can be together Scott has to defeat The League of Evil Exes. The League has all the people she ever dated before Scott in it, all the way back to seventh grade.

I didn’t know it before I saw the movie, but the movie is based on a graphic novel set called Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life. After I saw the movie I wanted to see the comic too. There isn’t a Kindle version so I got it in the Comixology app.

What I Liked: In the movie, I LOVED all the music, that the movie is so funny, and how there was so much videogame stuff.

There are sound effects and music from Legend of Zelda, Mario Brothers, Final Fantasy and other videogames all through the movie, and all the fight scenes are like videogame fights. When Scott defeats someone they explode into coins just like in a videogame, and it shows what Scott’s score was for defeating that person. Scott having to fight the evil exes is like the levels in a videogame too, where each one he defeats is a little harder to beat and worth more coins and points. Scott even has to level up, and use an extra life to defeat the final boss evil ex.

Scott is in a band that’s in a battle of the bands, so there’s a lot of really great music in the movie. I liked it so much I looked it up online and found out there’s a soundtrack album for the movie and now I want to get it.

[KF on KND Editor’s note: All of the music Scott’s band plays in the movie was written by Beck, and he performs in most of the songs. All of the actors in Scott’s band (including Michael Cera, who plays Scott) really played their own instruments, both in the film and on the soundtrack. Other artists featured in the film and on the soundtrack are Metric, Plumtree and Broken Social Scene.]

The movie is VERY funny, too.

The movie is so close to the graphic novel. I laughed a lot when I was reading the graphic novel just because the characters look so much like the actors in the movie, and a lot of the time they say exactly the same things! It was really cool to see how they turned the comic into a movie but still kept it mostly the same.

What Could Be Better: Nothing could be better about the movie. I wish the comic was in color, but that’s the only thing I would change.

Overall Rating: Instant Video – 5/5 stars, Graphic Novel – 4/5 stars

I Would Recommend To: I think anyone who likes music, comics or videogames will like this movie. People who like funny movies will like this movie too. Anyone who likes the movie will probably like the comic.

[KF on KND Editor’s Note to Parents: The film is rated PG-13 for some mild profanity, and because Scott Pilgrim’s roommate is gay. The roommate’s orientation and dating relationships are portrayed very openly and matter-of-factly.  The story doesn’t make any point for or against being gay, the roommate’s orientation is treated with the same casual and humorous attitude that’s taken toward the other, boy-girl romantic relationships in the story. If you believe this is inappropriate for your children, they should not see this film or read the comic.]
