Video Spotlight: To Celebrate Independence Day!


Here in the U.S. we’re getting ready to celebrate the founding of our nation tomorrow, on July 4th. If you’d like a little cinematic, patriotic mood-setting, any of these Instant Videos will do the trick!

Gettysburg (rated PG, avg review rating 4.5/5 stars, $2.99 to rent, $9.99 to buy) – The epic story of the three day battle that forever changed the course of the American Civil War, this sweeping drama is compassionately recounted through the eyes of soldiers both Confederate and Union.

Gods & Generals, Director’s Cut Special Extended Edition (rated PG-13, avg review rating of 5/5 stars, $2.99 to rent, $9.99 to buy) – Covering four major battles of the Civil War, this epic saga charts the early years of the Civil War, how the campaigns unfolded from Manassas to the Battle of Fredericksburg and the rise and fall of legendary war hero “Stonewall Jackson.”

National Treasure (rated PG, avg review rating 4/5 stars, $1.99 to rent) – A treasure hunter is in hot pursuit of a mythical treasure that has been passed down for centuries, while his employer turned enemy is onto the same path. The key to solving the mystery is hidden in The Declaration of Independence, and to solve it the hero must go on a whirlwind hunt through the many landmarks surrounding the birth of the United States.

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets (rated PG, avg review rating 4/5 stars, $1.99 to rent, $9.99 to buy) – Nic Cage is back as the intrepid treasure hunter, and this time he’s out to solve the mystery behind Lincoln’s assassination.

JFK – (rated R, avg review rating 4/5 stars, $2.99 to rent, $9.99 to buy) – Oliver Stone’s award-winning masterpiece that examines an alternative theory of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Born on the Fourth of July (rated R, avg review rating 4/5 stars, $2.99 to rent) – The biography of Ron Kovic, as portrayed by Tom Cruise. Paralyzed in the Vietnam war, he becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.

Finally, there’s the wonderful HBO miniseries, John Adams (rated TV-14, avg review rating 4/5 stars, $1.99 to purchase each episode, $22.99 to buy the entire miniseries). This series takes an intimate look at one of America’s founding fathers and its second President. A winner of 4 Golden Globes, this program is a fascinating and well-acted look at the early days of the nation, when its eventual union into a dominant world power was far from certain.
