Free App of the Day: World Cricket Championship Pro

In India, the UK and elsewhere, cricket is as huge as NFL football is here in the States. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the sport or dabbler, if you know how cricket is played you’ll want to give today’s Amazon Free App of the Day a try.

World Cricket Championship Pro, rated an average of 4/5 stars across 50 reviews, usually sells for $3 in the Amazon App Store, but today only it’s free. From Amazon:

Game of Champions

The tension, the fun, the high voltage drama; it’s all here in World Cricket Championship – Pro. This 3D-style cricket game takes you into the arena of international cricket, offering two game modes for twice the intensity.

Up to bat

In Quick Play, choose your own team and your opponent. Batsmen are pre-chosen, but you select your bowlers from the players available. By winning the toss you have the option to bat or ball first. You can play either a 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 over match. If you are a first-time player, try Quick Play mode a few times before you move on to Tournament mode.

In Tournament mode, two groups play simultaneously, though you only confront the team from the other group at the quarter-final level. Choose your own side and play against the specified team. As in Quick Play, batsmen are specified, but you can select your bowlers. Win at least four games out of six to avoid elimination and enter the quarter-finals. Elimination automatically ends the tournament. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are knock-out rounds. Win your quarter-final to enter the semi-final round, then progress toward the championship match.

Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer Troy Packrat says:

I think this is the first cricket app I’ve ever seen.

The graphics look fantastic and the sound is great. There is an announcer calling the play by play, and while he does get a bit repetitive after a while, this is true of most sports games.

The one major flaw with this app is that it lacks any sort of instructions on how to play cricket. It has instructions on how to play this particular computer game, but not the game of cricket in general…This game is clearly written for the cricket enthusiast…

I didn’t realize it, but this app actually includes two different games, World Cricket Championship and World Premier League. I initially thought the button for the latter was just a league logo, like the MLB logo in a baseball game. WCC and WPL appear to have the same gameplay and follow the same basic rules, just different teams and different tournament systems.

If you’re one of those [people] who actually understands the sport, then this app is a definite must purchase.

And if you’re one of those people who doesn’t understand the sport, this YouTube video should get you up to speed:
