App Spotlight: 3 Terrific Free Puzzle Games

The bewildering quantity of games available for your Kindle Fire can be overwhelming, but if you’re a fan of casual puzzle games, here are three we’ve tried and can personally recommend—and they’re all currently available for free in the Amazon Android App Store!

First up, Greedy Spiders. This turn-based logic game is fun for kids (recommended for ages 9 and up) and adults alike. Each level begins with one or more bugs trapped in the spider’s web. It’s up to you to snip or burn through the thread segments of the web before the spider can get to the hapless insects. You get the first turn, then the spider makes his move, and so on, back and forth with you destroying one segment at a time and the spider crawling across one segment at a time until all the bugs buzz happily away or the spider gets to one of them. This game is available in a free (ad supported) version containing 60 levels (average customer rating of 4.5/5 stars across 1051 reviews) and  a 99-cent version with 120 levels (average customer rating of 4.5/5 stars across 586 reviews). Below is a screenshot of the free, ad-supported version; as you can see, the ads do not interfere with gameplay.

If you loved Tetris, you’ll love Tetriblox. Rated an average of 5/5 stars across 24 customer reviews and currently available for free, this game features the same basic gameplay as Tetris, but it adds the fun option of being able to turn gravity on or off and also has leaderboards. Whether you’ve got just a few minutes or more than an hour to play, this all-ages puzzler is as good a boredom-buster as the classic on which it’s based.

Finally, we come to Scamps: a kind of cross between Tetris and Bejeweled, in this color matching game you try to align groups of Scamps by color as they drop into the field of play to clear the screen. The Scamps are living, fuzzy, animated and vocal little balls of fluff with personality to spare. With an average customer rating of 4.25 across 228 reviews, this popular game offers five different modes: Color Clear (clear the level by matching colors), 90 Seconds (see how many Scamps you can clear in 90 seconds, and try to earn time extension bonuses by clearing an entire color from the screen), More Colors (like Color Clear, but with a larger number of colors to increase the challenge), Extreme (must match at least 3 Scamps to remove them) and Time Attack (a timed Scamp blitz in which larger numbers of Scamps appear on-screen with increasing speed as you play). Scamps is fun and funny, a good pick for kids (recommended for ages 9 and up) and adults who enjoy puzzle games, and it’s currently available for free.
