Prime Video Spotlight: Shakespeare Film Adaptations

The recent production of Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, as well as King Lear starring Sir Ian McKellen, are both currently in the Prime Video catalog.

Macbeth (3.5/5 stars)

From the producers of THE KING’S SPEECH comes the feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play MACBETH about Scottish General Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) whose ambitious wife (Marion Cotillard) urges him to use wicked means in order to gain power of the throne over the sitting king.

Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a re-imagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

Macbeth (4.5/5 stars)

Ian McKellen gives a tour-de-force performance as Shakespeare’s tragic titular monarch in this special television adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of one the playwright’s most enduring and haunting works.

King Lear, old and tired, divides his kingdom among his daughters, giving great importance to their protestations of love for him. When Cordelia, youngest and most honest, refuses to idly flatter the old man in return for favor, he banishes her and turns for support to his remaining daughters. But Goneril and Regan have no love for him and instead plot to take all his power from him.

In a parallel, Lear’s loyal courtier Gloucester favors his illegitimate son Edmund after being told lies about his faithful son Edgar.

Madness and tragedy befall both ill-starred fathers.
