Thomas’ Review:

Eleven year old Lyra Belacqua lives in a world different than ours but quite the same. In this world every human has their own daemon, which is the opposite sex of its human and always an animal. Lyra has lived in Jordan College for as long as she can remember and has been quite content there until the return of her uncle lord Asriel. Ever since she was a little girl she has dreamed of going to the north with her uncle but he always had a reason not to bring her.

Lyra is desperate to go to the north this time because her best friend Roger has been taken to the far north by evil kidnappers called GOBBLERS. Her wishes are answered by a woman called Mrs. Coulter who happens to be going to the north and needs an assistant. Lyra accepts and the night before she goes Jordan’s master gives her this strange instrument called an alethiometer or golden compass. After staying with the lady for a couple of weeks Lyra discovers she is the head of the GOBBLERS.

She runs away and that is when her true journey begins, teaming up with gyptians, an aeronaut, and an armored bear, she sets off on a journey where she saves the kids, learns to use the alethiometer and the truth about her parentage.

I really like this book and can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel!
